FAQ - Diabetology

  • What is Diabetes?

Diabetes Mellitus refers to a metabolic condition where blood sugar levels are high due to lack of the hormone Insulin.

  • What are the different types of diabetes?
    1. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Insulin secreting cells of the pancreas (Beta cells) gets destroyed due to an inappropriate response of the body’s defense mechanism. This causes insulin production from the pancreas to stop. Most commonly seen in young children.
    2. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Insulin resistance is a condition in which the cells do not respond normally to insulin, causing decreased absorption of glucose into the cells.
    3. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus : raised blood sugar levels during pregnancy, usually resolves after delivery.
  • Can Diabetes be cured?

Till date, no cure for Diabetes Mellitus has been found. However, lifestyle modifications and proper medications can prevent worsening of the condition.

  • How often should I consult a doctor for diabetes?

Depending on the medications you are on and your blood reports, you should consult a doctor every 3-6months.
